The guidelines enable automotive machine shop employees to develop and asses their skills while on the job. The manual identifies 18 skill sets required by a competent motive power machinist. 

Developed by the aftermarket industry in cooperation with government and educational facilities, the guideline provides an on-the-job training blueprint for both the employee and the employer.
