Putting a Dollar Amount on the Impact of Disruptors in the Automotive Aftermarket: AIA Canada's Follow-Up Report on the CASE Platform

In 2017, the Automotive Industries Association (AIA) of Canada established the foundation of how the aftermarket landscape will forever be altered with the introduction of the connected, autonomous, shared, and electric (CASE) platform. AIA Canada's latest report, A CASE of Disruption: Economic Impacts to the Canadian Automotive Aftermarket, further explores the impact of these vehicles over a span of 30 years, starting in 2020. This report is prepared by The Conference Board of Canada.

Key Findings:

  • In 2017, the automotive aftermarket employed close to 400,000 people and generated an estimated $27.6 billion* in economic activity.
  • A move towards connected, autonomous, shared, and electric vehicles could result in an estimated loss of more than 48,000 jobs, $7.0 billion in GDP, and $5.4 billion in labour income in the aftermarket by 2051.
  • Connectivity may have greater adverse impacts than automation and electrification will.

* According to the independent research findings of The Conference Board of Canada.

The report estimates that at the beginning, effects would be small as new technologies are introduced gradually. By 2051, the impacts would be much more significant with thousands of job losses and negative impacts to the economy making it harder to ignore the ramifications of these technologies.

This report is a must-read for prudent aftermarket businesses who want to embrace the upcoming technological changes in a realistic fashion, and with a clear view of protecting their future in this sector.
