Automotive Industries Association of Canada and partners continue Innovation in Automotive Training program

October 17, 2024

Ottawa, Ontario, October 17, 2024 – The Automotive Industries Association of Canada (AIA Canada) in collaboration with the Government of Ontario, Conestoga College, Fanshawe College, Mohawk College, St. Lawrence College and Plug N’ Drive is excited to announce the continuation of the Innovation in Automotive Training program until March 2025.

Made possible through round four of the Ontario Government’s Skills Development Fund, this project will build on the success of round three and has been expanded to include new partners, new training locations and renewed curriculum. This initiative is designed to address two critical issues in Ontario’s auto care sector: a lack of automotive tradespeople and the requirement for them to be trained to handle modern vehicles, particularly electric vehicles (EVs).

As Ontario builds a world-leading electric vehicle supply chain and automotive sector, our government is proud to partner with The Automotive Industries Association of Canada to ensure workers have the opportunities and skills to thrive in this rapidly growing industry,” said David Piccini, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. “We will continue to provide resources to strengthen training and support for the jobs of now and tomorrow.”

The Innovation in Automotive Training program offers training in four key areas for the automotive sector: career exploration, electric vehicle (EV) up-skilling, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and mentoring excellence training.

Career exploration training includes engaging and firsthand learning and experience on a variety of cars with special emphasis on ICE (internal combustion engines) vehicles and new technologies for those looking to join the automotive trades.

Electric vehicle (EV) up-skilling training allows licensed automotive technicians and senior level apprentices to further develop their skillset relating to the repair and maintenance of EVs.

Advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) training provides licensed automotive technicians and senior level apprentices residing and working in Ontario the opportunity to comprehend and boost their repair and maintenance skills surrounding ADAS.

Mentoring excellence is a facilitated live virtual training aimed at shop owners, managers and journey people working in Ontario’s mechanical automotive sector and aims to develop foundational human resources knowledge on how to attract, train, and retain apprentices and staff within their shop.

This round includes new training locations at Mohawk College’s Stoney Creek and Fennell Campuses. In addition to Mohawk College, training will continue to take place at:

  • Conestoga College, Guelph Campus
  • Fanshawe College, London Campus
  • St. Lawrence College, Cornwall Campus
