Quebec leads the way on the right to repair: A major step forward for the industry
The Automotive Industries Association of Canada (AIA Canada) has been actively engaged in consultations regarding the Quebec government’s proposed regulations on the right to repair in the automotive sector. We have worked diligently to represent and advocate for the interests of the auto care industry, and we continue to do so.
Quebec is currently leading the way on this issue, having passed legislation in fall 2023 that supports the right to repair. The proposed regulation is one of the most significant developments stemming from this legislation. It focuses on access to repair and maintenance tools for vehicles and aims to restrict exceptions that allow automakers to limit access to the data required for vehicle repair, maintenance, and parts replacement.
This regulation is part of a series of measures stemming from the legislation, covering penalties, access fees, and other critical regulatory aspects. It represents one of the most crucial steps in ensuring fair access to the resources necessary for vehicle maintenance and repair.
The document submitted by AIA Canada during the consultation process is available here (available in French only).
We extend our gratitude to all our members, particularly the Quebec Division of AIA Canada, for their dedication and participation in this important issue. Our efforts remain focused on advancing the right to repair at the national level, ensuring fair access to repair data and tools.
Thank you for your continued support.
While this progress in Quebec marks a significant victory—and other provinces are exploring similar initiatives—federal legislation remains the best solution to establish a uniform and fair framework for the entire Canadian auto care industry. That is why we continue to champion this cause nationwide.
