Second federal election in two years – same result

Justin Trudeau has won his third federal election in 6 years.

Not all the votes have been counted yet, however major media outlets have reported that Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party of Canada are projected to form a minority government in a parliament that looks very similar to how it looked when the election was called.

According to results so far, the Liberals won with a smaller share of the popular vote than any other winning party before them. The Conservatives won the popular vote with an estimated 5,432,041 votes, with the Liberals garnering 5,155,947 votes. The People’s Party of Canada made major gains since being on the ballot for the first time in 2019, garnering over 800,000 votes.

As of the morning following the election, pending the counting of mail-in ballots, the results stand at:

• Liberals have won 158 seats, the party held 155 seats at the dissolution of Parliament.
• Conservatives have won 121 seats, held 119 seats at dissolution.
• Bloc Quebecois won 29 seats, held 32 seats at dissolution.
• NDP won 28 seats, held 24 seats at dissolution.
• Green Party won 2 seats, held 2 seats at dissolution.
• People’s Party of Canada failed to win a seat.

Some interesting results from 2021 federal election:

• This was the most expensive election in Canada’s history costing a grand total of $600 million.
• A record number of Canadians, an estimated 800,000, voted by mail.
• Green Party leader, Annamie Paul, failed to win a seat in her Toronto Centre riding. However, the Green Party won its first ever seat in Ontario (Kitchener Centre) – and for just the second time in its history, it will send more than one MP to Ottawa.
• The People’s Party of Canada has more than tripled its support since the 2019 election. The party’s stronger showing may have hurt the Conservatives. According to an analysis by CBC News Labs, vote splitting between the Tories and the PPC may have cost the Conservatives up to 24 ridings.
