Destructive weld testing
Destructive weld testing is essential to making sure that the technician is performing this critical step in the repair process correctly. If a part were welded onto a vehicle without testing the welds, there would be no way to know if the weld settings and techniques used would create an effective bond.
Destructive testing gives the technician the ability to adjust the welder or their techniques in order to produce a quality weld before the piece is welded on the vehicle.
Carry out a visual inspection before any destructive weld test. Scrap metal from the vehicle, or metal of the same type and thickness, is used. This way, the technician can see whether the weld has proper penetration, or if the tools or techniques need to be changed.
The piece is then twisted and torn to test the weld. This shows if a proper, strong weld has been made.
I-CAR Canada’s welding courses teach the skills and techniques you need to create strong welds on a variety of metals. Check out the course catalog today.
