Do you really need a spot welder?

June 29, 2022

High-strength steel (HSS) and ultra-high-strength-steel (UHSS) are found on most modern vehicles. These affect the attachment method you’ll use when replacing body panels.

Because of the use of HSS and UHSS, most vehicle makers prefer squeeze-type resistant spot welding (STRSW) when attaching panels. While conventional gas metal arc (GMA) welding will likely continue to be used for sectioning, the number of OEMs allowing GMA welding for panel attachment applications will continue to drop.

As more OEMs require or recommend the use of spot weld, a spot welder will become a necessary piece of equipment for collision repair shops.

As always, follow the OEM welding requirements, including the required attachment method, to help make sure are making complete, safe, and quality repairs.

I-Car Canada offers spot welding courses in both English and French. Check them out on the I-Car Canada course catalogue.
