Trump, tariffs, and a new presidency: Impacts on Canada’s auto care industry
Donald Trump is returning to the White House. Following the 2024 election, Republicans have secured control of both the Senate, and House of Representatives, giving the party full control of federal power.
What does this mean for Canada’s auto care sector, exactly?
Throughout president-elect Trump’s campaign, he pledged to impose new tariffs on foreign imports as part of his “America first” agenda, aiming to boost domestic manufacturing and reduce reliance on foreign supply chains.
And now, just last week, he announced plans for a new 25 per cent tariff on all imports from Canada and Mexico, citing it as a response to border-related issues such as drugs and illegal immigration.
In this Curbside Chat episode, we dive into the impact of Trump-era policies on the Canadian auto care sector, such as tariffs and their potential effects on the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA).
Joining the conversation are Kate Harrison, vice chair at Summa Strategies, and Jean-François Champagne, CAE, president and CEO of AIA Canada. Hosted by Emily Holtby, vice president of government relations at AIA Canada, this episode provides expert perspectives on the challenges and opportunities the industry may face during the Trump administration.
