National Vehicle Kilometres Travelled Metrics – Q4 2021 and Q1 2022 (Partial)

AIA Canada has partnered with StreetLight Data, a US-based firm that provides Big Data for mobility across North America. Using a combination of machine learning with deep transportation knowledge, their data sheds light on the average kilometers driven across Canada.

Vehicle usage, or kilometres driven per vehicle, is a key factor in determining aftermarket demand. The total demand for aftermarket products and services is closely tied to vehicle wear and tear, which is a function of distance travelled. The onset of COVID-19 witnessed an unprecedented decline in vehicle usage in 2020, and now more than ever kilometres driven is a leading indicator of market performance.

Through this partnership, AIA Canada aims to provide members and industry with the KMs driven knowledge needed to make strategic business decisions. The methodology developed for this research will span across three key years – 2019 (pre-COVID), 2020 (peak COVID) and 2021 (COVID & beyond). The trend lines will be based on quarterly data starting from 2019 to present.
